5 places to get delicious pie in Shanghai for Pi Day
Thank God it's Pi Day! 3.14 (aka March 14) is that special date when the world gets to celebrate two of life's most necessary things: maths and dessert; π and pie. Here are five great places to get yourself a slice today (and every other day).
Al's Bakery
For good old American-style baked goods, there's no place like Al's Bakery. For Pi Day, Al's is offering 25 percent off slices of all its homemade pies. We love the tart and creamy Key Lime minis, and the classic Apple is always a winner. You'll also want to try the Crème Brûlée pie and the mini Peanut Butter Banana pies. Basically, just get a piece of each (28RMB per slice or mini pie). While you're there, you may as well go all out with a scoop of Gracie's ice cream.
Al's Bakery 174 Xiangyang Nan Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu, Xuhui district.
Pie Society
If you're looking for savoury, Pie Society is the Time Out favourite for home-style British pies. Whether carnivore or herbivore, there's a pie for you. Don't miss out on the spring specials, like Sgt Pepper (55RMB) with peppery beef that's slow cooked in Jameson for 24 hours; or The Royal Thainess (45RMB) filled with Thai Massaman squash and veggie curry.
Pie Society Unit B102, 381 Panyu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu, Changning district.
Dutch Pies
For Dutch-style pies with a twist, grab a whole pie from Dutch Pies. In honour of this fine Pi Day, it's offering a nine-inch pie combo box where you can mix and match four flavours of homemade pie for 198RMB. Choose from Grandma's Apple, Bourbon Walnut Chocolate, Banana Toffee or Pear and Fig; or upgrade to Cherry or Mango Cheese pie for an extra 10RMB, or pecan for an extra 20RMB. In spite of this sweet deal, we're keen on the Rice Pudding pie with cream (113RMB for 7-inch; 178RMB for 9-inch).
Dutch Pies The Market, 280 Aomen Lu, near Changhua Lu, Putuo district; Amanda Plaza, Third Floor, 1118 Changshou Lu, near Wanhangdu Lu, Putuo district
Charlie's
When it comes to pie, there's no need to be a purist. Get stuck into Charlie's Pumpkin Pie milkshake (45RMB); a big slice o' pumpkin pie and lots of ice cream blended together into one uber-thick treat.
Charlie's 91 Changshu Lu, near Changle Lu, Jingan district.
FiKA
Swedish bakery FiKA has rolled out a new treat just in time for Pi Day; individual blueberry-raspberry pies (35RMB) that are little rounds of heaven. They've got a thin oat crust overflowing with tart, slightly sweetened berries and a buttery crumb topping. If that's not enough, the masters in the kitchen finish it off with a dollop of rich vanilla cream.
FiKA 382 Shaanxi Nan Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu, Xuhui district.
